topped off oil today... didn't need much... also ordered transmission fluid and pump... going to change myself :) notes from Drayton Webb:
Hi Charles, it’s good to hear from you. And kudos on the SC transformation…….looks like you are turning it into much more of a track toy……looks great!
The SC e51 tranny has 3 aluminum drain/fill plugs/bolts…..the bottom drain plug, the side fill and/or the “top-off” plug, and the top fill plug. ALWAYS loosen your fill/top off plug(s) first to insure that they are not frozen/stripped BEFORE you loosen and drain all your fluid. You NEVER want to find that you have drained all your old fluid only then find out that your fill plugs can’t be removed…..NO BUENO.
Keep in mind that these Toyota drain/fill plugs have rather soft aluminum heads on the bolts so you MUST use the correct size 6 sided socket!! and do NOT over tighten or you could damage the bolt head! So be VERY careful with them when removing, and installing them. It’s probably a good idea to purchase a new Toyota tranny drain and fill plug to replace your old ones. The side fill/overflow bolt is where I usually fill from. With the car level up on jack stands I usually loosen the side plug first and then loosen and remove the bottom drain plug. Once I have drained all the fluid then I fill via the side plug until the fluid starts coming out of the side fill plug hole. When it starts coming out the side plug you will know that the fluid level is correct and then install your new fill plug. You can fill from the TOP fill plug but you will then need to watch for fluid coming out of the side fill/overflow hole.
I use Redline MTL (manual transmission fluid). Great stuff. I use Redline products in all my cars trannies and differentials……love all their products. Pricey….yes…..but worth it in my opinion. Runs about $15 a quart and the tranny takes approx 2 1/2 qtrs. so you will need to purchase 3 quarts. Local Speed shops and the www sell it. You should always allow about 5 to 10 minutes of easy driving to allow the tranny fluid to warm up to a good operating temp before you do any “aggressive/spirited” shifting and/or driving. Some people like the Redline MT90, I prefer the MTL on the SC tranny….your call. Once warmed up-you, should experience a more smoother transmission with smoother and better shifts, and hopefully longer lasting synchronizers!

I use one of these inexpensive hand pumps, and just pour the Redline fluid into an empty quart oil bottle, and hand pump the fluid into the side fill hole. Because of how Redline products are bottled, these hand pumps with not fit/work on their containers, thus that is why I transfer the fluid over to a empty “traditional” plastic quart oil container.
